Creating Change
A few of our friends at the University of Michigan are at the Creating Change conference in Detroit. MBA student Alex Goldsmith sets the scene...
Creating Change is about friends, strangers and the people in-between. It is about fostering our community through impacting LGBT civil rights, awareness and acceptance. The first day of the conference brought together the universities of Michigan, UCLA and PENN State in Motor City. If you have ever been to one of these conferences you know how empowering the conversations and discussions can be. What has been great is seeing the turnout of the bisexual and transgender community and the variation in the ages of the attendees.
The first day of the Creating Change Conference centered around the themes of youth empowerment, LGBT diversity and it is never too late to take pride in your sexuality. The opening ceremony began with a moment of silence for Mitt Romney‚s presidential campaign led by Comedian and Proud Lesbian Kate Clinton. For the 51 of us attending from the University of Michigan, a common them for us was pride. When Director Gabe Javier of our LGBT Resource Center took the stage, as one of the lead organizers of this year‚s Creating Change conference, we were proud of him as well as proud of our university, the first in the country to have an LGBT Resource Center.
NAACP Chairman Julian Bond was phenomenal as a speaker. As he said in connecting the civil rights movement to the LGBT movement "Sometimes it is the simplest of acts that challenge the way we think." I think the next three days will be amazing in Detroit.
