Braving the cold for justice

Colorado College students stood out in the crazy coldness in response to homophobic and racist incidents on campus. According to KKTV, while this is not in response to one particular incident, one of the problems include anti-gay graffiti on several dorm room doors (Some idiot with nothing else better to do wrote "enjoy AIDS on someone's door).

Also, not surprisingly, at the hockey games, students tend to chant homophobic things to the opposing team. Glad to know that the college prez is on the case; they will begin a discussion on diversity starting in February...

"I believe its objectionable and wrong on our campus," said CC President Dick Celeste. He learned about the incidents through the student newspaper, and sent a campus-wide email expressing his own concern.

Celeste says some students are simply ignorant. Others may be influenced by the culture. "Being crude is something that is almost rewarded, in talk radio or popular culture or whatever. That doesn't make it right," he said.

This was an all nighter-- Friday through Saturday. Props to the students for standing up and saying, "no more hatred!"

But, I have to wonder— will this whole "diversity discussion" stuff actually do anything? Usually, it's the people who are on the brunt of the abuse that show up to these sorts of things. Not the morons with magic markers in hand.
